Anneliese Vorbis at DRIFT

FEATURED ARTIST at DRIFT

Anneliese Vobis
Biomimicry
Vobis graduated with an MFA from California College for the Arts, SF in 2008 and exhibited widely through the US including the San Francisco Bay Area and New York. Artist reception to follow shortly, so check back in a week or so!!

Anneliese Vobis’ manufactured/organic sculpture seems to replicate the growth of the California landscape, both in nature and in human-made manifestation. Especially in the 21st Century, as California becomes better known for its vibrant visual art culture, Vobis captures what is inherently visual about California (lush greenscapes, natural growth intermixing with the solely structural, the overwhelming mass of bright flora) and what has transformed the West Coast contemporary art scene: a mimicry that lives on without a shelf life. Vobis works within the dichotomy that encompass the polarities of California now: the newly erected and the natural biospheric, both large parts of the contemporary California experience.

We have Oaklandish!

We have Oaklandish tees for men and women, and they are flying off the shelves.
Come get yours quick!

What is Oaklandish all about?
"Representing the strange luster & oddball spirit that is East Bay Life.
It appears that Oakland pride is quite contagious! It's nice to see the proliferation of different Oakland T-shirt designs currently hitting the racks. But as you know, our roots run way deeper than any screen-print could ever convey. The true purpose here is to creatively promote our enduring love for "original Oakland charm" in the face of a constantly mutating culture, population and landscape. When you rock the roots, you evoke all the hidden history & rebel spirit of The Town, in its many incarnations. This way successive generations of young Oaklanders can gain a deeper understanding of the place they call home. Thanks for helping to spread the local love." From Oaklandish.com

Revolutionary Style.

Happy Bastille Day!
"Bastille Day, the French national holiday, commemorates the storming of the Bastille, which took place on 14 July 1789 and marked the beginning of the French Revolution." At that point in history the French took cues from the Americans in fighting for their freedoms. And, as we know here in the States (throughout history) we have taken many a cue from the French when it comes to cuisine, design, and dressing.

So, it only seems appropriate that the beauty icons of France have taken such an American institution (denim) to new heights of fashion, and that is great style inspiration for us all!

Emulate simple classic French style with a great pair of jeans and an 'unfussy' top.

And, to add a bit of French Flair to your home, visit Drift's sister store Mignonne. Just around the corner at 1000 Jefferson Street.

Let out your inner Freedom Child...

Here we are mid-summer, and the season of the outdoor music festival is upon us. And the wardrobe piece of choice for such festivals is of course, denim. Since the 60's outdoor music festival goers have dressed themselves in denim. With good reason, jeans are the symbol of youth, counter-culture,and of course just plain comfortable!

Freedom of Choice denim perfectly embodies elements of the late sixties and early seventies-
with their high waist and wide leg denim styles in lighter summer washes.

"Freedom of Choice is best described as seventies style, music inspired denim. The designer Nathan Menashe further describes the line as being about self-worth, perserverance and passion for music and, in a word, life; hence the name Freedom of Choice. The denim has a few signature styles that include the Fillmore, a wide leg; the Lollapalooza, a straight leg; and the Greenwich a boot cut. All styles are known for their long inseams and sleek fit which flatter every woman’s
body."

So come by, and check out the Freedom of Choice Jeans stocked at Drift.
For summer style inspiration, check out films like Woodstock, Monterey Pop and The Rolling Stones Rock & Roll Circus.

Summer 08's Dirndl Skirt Redefines Sexy Legs through the Fall!!

(Above: Anzevino and Florence's take on the traditional dirndl skirt. A&F Jumpskirt $189 at Drift.)

One of the greatest benefits of being an avid blog reader is knowing what is hot, how to wear something to its highest potential, and when something is in-store and available for you to come see in person!

Allow us the divine pleasure of introducing you to the Dirndle Skirt--- THE skirt of summertime this season.....Here's a few reasons (beyond the obvious) to pick up on this look now:

-Denim skirts are sexy of course, but you want to move away from the crowd for a moment and really stand out.

-Light, light, and light! The 2008 Dirndl Skirts are next to wearing nothing, ladies.

-Fluid sex appeal, not restrictive. These skirts can double as a dress! Check this out: your at a BBQ during the day wearing the dirndl skirt with a low cut tank with ballerina flats. 9pm rolls around and you ditch the tank, pull up the skirt to show those legs and add your 3" pumps or knee high boots! And, when the fall rolls around and days start getting cooler, guess whats not going away with your summer digs? Really!! Wear it with thick tights and boots or stacked knee-high socks through the fall for a warm fall look.

Check out this summary about the Dirndl Skirt by Vicky Talbot (Editor of BellaOnline)

"Evolving dramatically over the decades, the dirndl has fast become a key trend especially during the 1950s, defining the curves of Audrey Hepburn and Grace Kelly worn long and flowing with chiffon tops cinched at the waist. Sex and the City’s Carrie Bradshaw was a clear fan of the dirndl wearing dramatically billowing style with pretty pumps and tiny vests. More recently, Brit-pop princess Lily Allen the queen of prom night chic and fond follower of fifties-inspired fashion is often seen sporting a voluminous dirndl skirt or swishy cocktail dress on the red carpet.

The figure-friendly dirndl skirt sits high on the waist, fitted across the hips and billows out, classically to the mid-calf but more modern styles such as those in the spring/summer 2008 Miu Miu collection skim the thighs, splaying out in theatrical angles boosted by layers of tulle. The dirndl can be a real statement skirt. It oozes volume and demands attention; choose tropical prints or block colour styles with special features like oversized bows, thick waist belts and chunky buttons. The perfect summer cover up, this style is great for hiding tummies and bottoms and creates curves in all the right places. Longer styles (to the mid-calf) are elegant and great for long legs, while shorter styles are equally fun with a super-girly edge.

Dirndl skirts are also incredibly versatile. Wear with frothy chiffon blouses tucked in and tamed at the waist or with a fitting vest and cropped jacket, particularly if you’re of a more petite frame to avoid being drowned in swathes of billowing fabric.

As for footwear, the only shoes to accompany the dirndl are the prettiest of ballerina flats. Strappy heels and t-bar sandals look great with a dirndl for a glamorous evening look, but for a more casual daytime style opt for pumps and keep accessories to a minimum letting the volume and swishy swish movement of your new favourite skirt do all the talking."

NEW PROGRAM SUPPORTING LOCAL DESIGNERS LAUNCHED AT DRIFT!!

The Scenario: Oakland/Berkeley/SF is jam packed with hot emerging jewelry/handbag/clothing designers and of course with the high cost of rents in the beautiful Bay Area, its hard to have a studio space to create and promote your goods, but its still a neccesity.

The Solution: Everyone who works at/with Drift is an artist in some capacity and knows this money-time-space dilema very well and so when brainstorming how to work directly with local designers and promote emerging designers in the Bay Area we thought it would be awesome to bring the designer in-house by offering rock bottom rent for the prime loft space at Drift, turning it into a studio and renting it to local designers in need of local, affordable space in the growing neighborhood of Old Oakland. We also thought it would be killer to showcase the in-house designers work as it flourishes at Drift.
