New Local Jewelry at Drift!!

Kaya Sattva Jewelry is distinctive~ each fully unique of the ones made before. They are created spontaneously, inspired by each piece's own elements and how they "communicate". This allows for the realization of one-of-a-kind ornaments that lift your mood and offer you a sense of expressive individuality.
In the current widespread culture of mass production and conventionalized styles, Spiritjoy Designs are personal assertions favoring the richness of artistic originality, spiritual creativity and things made with soul.
Also, laser cut earrings and necklaces by Hungry-y Designs (San Francisco) are now available at Drift! Designed by Yvonne Hung, Hungry-y Designs are beautifully laser cut with adjustable leather strapping.
Supporting local designers is not only great for our local economy and artists, but the pieces are one-of-a-kind which means you wont be seeing everyone else wearing YOUR fine!!

Another Case for Plaid: Geometrically Disposed, NYT 11/13/08

Plaid, with its huge fall/winter 08 come back
has been connected to "lifting spirits"
Best way to plaid-dom? Layered over stripes.

(From the article in Thursday's NYT:)

"After a summer or two in which trim plaid Bermudas ousted baggy cargos as preferred attire for the cool kids, plaid has spread, like some sort of geometrically replicating fungus, to almost every article of clothing in a man’s closet.
“We’re all looking for something to lift our spirits,” said Tommy Fazio, men’s fashion director at Bergdorf Goodman. “Plaid equals happiness. You see someone wearing a cheery plaid shirt, it brings a smile to your face. And even though it’s dramatic, it’s not outrageous. An everyday guy can wear it.”
The more, the merrier. A lone plaid scarf says you just arrived in town from college — and 1962. A plaid scarf over a checked shirt and a plaid sport coat, topped with a tweed driving cap, suggests a different kind of schooling."
ps...In the spirit of plaid, Distilled men's collection includes a readymade plaid and houndstooth mixed blazer among a button front shirt/hoodie and we ahve them now at Drift!

THE COLOR BLOCK TREND SETTERS! Fall 08!!

A color-blocked Agyness Deyn, of course......

Of all the fall 08 trends, color blocking a la the 1980s has got to be the most fun. Take primary colors and layers, vintage mixed with a few new pieces, throw it all together and hello beautiful. Bold, awesome and full or energy all take the fall through Spring 09.

Ms. Obama flawlessly pulls it off on the road

While fashion critics complain of Michelle Obama's red and black Narciso Rodriguez dress on victory night in Grant Park, I must whole-heartedly disagree. Our new first lady (!!), Ms. Obama, has a certain style that rings true with the bold '08 color-block fashion trend-- and THANK GOD-- that Michelle knows how to take a risk and OWN it since the White House could use that energy after a dodgy eight years... Above, Ms. Obama showcases the fall color trend with blocks of yellow, electric blue and white.

So all complaints aside, a major lesson for men and women alike: YOU wear the clothes, the clothes dont wear you. Take a lead from Ms.Obama's best accessory-- her outrageously glowing smile. She could wear sweats and still look radiant and thats just killer!

Y-E-A-H OBAMA!!!!!!!

thank you for voting-- thank you!!

One Culture featured on UK's Denimology

One Culture - 1970s Influenced Raw Denim
oneculture was founded by Mark Carter in San Francisco in 2004 and has just released its Fall 08 and Spring 09 collection. For everyone who loved and still loves the 1970’s, this brand is for you. The creator himself is very nostalgic. He collects old action figures (which, by the way is where he got the name for one of his jeans) and has brought that personal characteristic into the artworks he calls “oneculture jeans.” His choices of colored thread in the photos below truly represent the 70’s in all its glory.
As with all brands, when starting out Mark knew he needed a distinction to his lines; something to set himself apart from the bigger players in the denim industry. He believes the back of the jeans is where the magic happens and so he chose to place his signature, the arrow (see below) at the top of all his pairs of denim. This characteristic is his favorite design aspect of his lines and is here to stay throughout his future collections. His lines thus far are considered to be fashion-forward takes on raw denim.

Cheap Monday's Liquid Legs For the Fall 08 Goth Trend

The Goth-inspired Fall 08 season (shown above) has most fashion forward ladies looking for the perfect jet black legging inspired stovepipe pant.....but with the economy as messy as it is, many cant splurge several hundred dollars for the real leather leggings, or are just not willing to actually sport leather leggings off the pages of a magazine-- either way, Cheap Monday's (music to our ears at a mere $65 dollars!) introduced a new tight legged, sheen-induced black skinny pant just in time for the fall! Pair with an understated black tank, a handful of metallic chains and some darling platform booties for a rich 08 fall look.

......More Artificial Flavor from Thrillist

Thursday Aug 28, 2008

Artificial Flavor

Growing up means foregoing excessive wardrobe flair, but forego it entirely and you'll be as exciting as a Docker's ad -- sans the music, golf, and toddlers to roll around with on fresh linens. Since no one wants that, go for understatement with edge, with Artificial Flavor.

Oddly enough started as a Frisco banana-hammock outfit (the founder was "tired of wrestling with his junk"), AF's now blossomed into a full line of moddishly tweaked classic casual wear. Fall starts with muted, slim-fit, raglan shoulder-stitched tees (U's and V's), soft polos w/ military pockets and subtly-ribbed placket detail, and a cotton-thermal turtleneck with a snap-up collar you can rock loose and floppy, or straight up (if it stays erect for more than four hours, have your physician unbutton it). Outerwear ranges from French terry kangaroo-pocket hoodies flared with reinforced shoulder patchwork, to proper jackets like a snap-up number with the breast 'n hip pockets' angles askew, a quilted pea coat that trades in conventional wool exterior for shiny black nylon, and a rip-stop waterproof windbreaker with gray/white arm stripes -- you'll be the nattiest guy at your next bike ride/natural disaster.

AF also still hawks its original product, 100% cotton underwear in both snug navy/olive/red "trunks", and skimpier "Bandito" briefs with junk-framing contrast piping --wear that, and wave goodbye to toddlers forever.

NEW ARTIFICIAL FLAVOR MENS COAT

This jacket might be the most avant-garde piece in our fall/winter line, like something Neo would wear in the Matrix. Made of garment dyed bull denim, this jacket has enough length to go past the waist. Rip stop shoulder patch, hidden zip flap, and two snap buttons at the neck make for a very versatile and style-packed jacket. FABRIC CONTENT: 100% Cotton
Come to Drift to try on this new Artificial Flavor Black Hidden Zip Padded Jacket

STEPS TO THE PERFECT JEANS

1. LOVE YOUR DENIM!!!!!!!!

2. Wash you Denim as infrequently as possible, especially your darks and raw denim

3. When washing, wash in cold water and hang dry or Dry Clean

4. Be careful with extremely dark and raw denim, because they are pure, and usually unprocessed, the indigo can rub off on light materials

5. Follow these steps to love your denim even longer!

My new CRAVE for 18th Amendment Jeans

Keep your eye out for these beauties designed and founded by two Aussie Designers Rachel Rose and Rebecca Dawson from Sydney Austrailia

18th Amendment takes its name from the USA amendment passed in 1920 prohibiting the consumption and production of alcohol. The spirit of the 18th Amendment brand is derived from the speakeasy culture of the 1920’s/30’s resulting from this ban: the gritty glamour of the illegally often Mafia owned underground bars and clubs. These dens were a melting pot of hedonism where the worlds of Mafioso, silver screen stars, noted creative’s, and fashionable people collided. Each 18th Amendment jean style is named after classic icons of the silver screen and beyond, referencing legendary feminine style though the 20th century. The signature wing back pocket logo is inspired by the 1930’s Rolls Royce “Flying Lady” who notoriously represents high quality design and elegance.

Each style invokes the spirit of the icon of which it is named. We have studied vintage denim and time lost techniques, looking at cuts, shapes, and detailing of the past and applying them in a way that is modern and relevant today.

What I love about 18th Amendment Jeans is that they bring all things awesome from vintage cuts and shapes and re-work an old look to fit a modern woman. Their High Wasited cuts give a unique sillouhette while lengthening the legs. They are a for sure head turner.

Rock them with a Vintage blouse, killer platforms and a contrasting belt, and you'll see...they'll put the "OO" in your GrOOve Thang.

All in all, if your looking for a way to update your look while still keeping in mind your love for fashion past, 18th Amendment is the quickest way- Give an Ode to looks from the past in today's crazy future...

Conservative Cool-Men's Fall/Winter Fashion 2008

For this Fall and Winter create a sophistocated look with tailored Trousers, collard shirts, and a killer coat.
Think cleaner lines, 2 Piece Suits and add a scarf to get a "Conservative Cool" Look. Not sure what color suit to chose? Grey is always a 1st choice in my book. It acts as a great neutral, allowing color to contrast beautifully.
Tired of boring office clothes? The idea is to wear your clothes slim, but not skinny. Purchasing a few staple pieces like a Grey Wool Suit, and flat front pants are a great way to update your Old Office Attire. Think Cary Grant.
With this winter's latest trend, it makes it easy for a young stylish professional to want to switch gears on their winter wardrobe.

Anneliese Vorbis at DRIFT

FEATURED ARTIST at DRIFT

Anneliese Vobis
Biomimicry
Vobis graduated with an MFA from California College for the Arts, SF in 2008 and exhibited widely through the US including the San Francisco Bay Area and New York. Artist reception to follow shortly, so check back in a week or so!!

Anneliese Vobis’ manufactured/organic sculpture seems to replicate the growth of the California landscape, both in nature and in human-made manifestation. Especially in the 21st Century, as California becomes better known for its vibrant visual art culture, Vobis captures what is inherently visual about California (lush greenscapes, natural growth intermixing with the solely structural, the overwhelming mass of bright flora) and what has transformed the West Coast contemporary art scene: a mimicry that lives on without a shelf life. Vobis works within the dichotomy that encompass the polarities of California now: the newly erected and the natural biospheric, both large parts of the contemporary California experience.

We have Oaklandish!

We have Oaklandish tees for men and women, and they are flying off the shelves.
Come get yours quick!

What is Oaklandish all about?
"Representing the strange luster & oddball spirit that is East Bay Life.
It appears that Oakland pride is quite contagious! It's nice to see the proliferation of different Oakland T-shirt designs currently hitting the racks. But as you know, our roots run way deeper than any screen-print could ever convey. The true purpose here is to creatively promote our enduring love for "original Oakland charm" in the face of a constantly mutating culture, population and landscape. When you rock the roots, you evoke all the hidden history & rebel spirit of The Town, in its many incarnations. This way successive generations of young Oaklanders can gain a deeper understanding of the place they call home. Thanks for helping to spread the local love." From Oaklandish.com
